NotesCaptain William Salter had joined the London Rifle Brigade as a Private on the outbreak of war. He transferred to the Middlesex Regiment on receiving his commission as an officer. He was killed at Waterlot Farm on the Somme in August, 1916, a few hundred yards south of Delville Wood. His father was Alfred Salter of Cromer and his mother Sarah, Hillside, Vicarage Road, Cromer. His father was a schoolteacher and active in a number of other town societies.
In the 1911 census he is living in Ilford,and working as a Surveyor (Railway), single and aged 26.
