Cromer Servicemen and Servicewomen in the First World War

Back

NameCharles John Bumfrey
WardSuffield Park
NotesHe was born at Alby, Norfolk and lived in Cromer. He enlisted in Norwich. He joined the 2nd Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment in March 1916 and was twice wounded. He was reported killed at Hollebecke, having been missing for nine months. At the time he was 29. It is not clear whether the service record date of 20th September is the date on which he first went missing, or when it was accepted that he was dead - though it seems probable that it is the former. There is no picture of him in the Cromer War Roll; he is one of those listed at the back of the book. In the 1911 census he was aged 22, and working as a Farm Labourer. Living at 6 York Terrace, Suffield Park, he was the son Jonathan and Georgina Bumfrey
